Lydia survives as the only orphan after the mother and the father passed away. Her mother died in the year 1994 leaving the 3-year-old girl with her father who had no one to turn to except the maternal grandmother. The maternal grandmother took in Lydia, her twin sister and 8 months old sister. The family had not made significant savings to see the children grow well.

The father got married to another wife. But before long tragedy struck again when both the father and the stepmother died of HIV/AIDS in 1999. The children were left with their ailing grandparents who were very poor and unable to care for the children.

Under the care of the grandmother, life was not bearable as the poor grand mother was unable to meet the daily needs of the orphaned infants. The children starved until Akinyi's twin sister died due to hunger. The poor grandparents were unable to cater for the children's needs so their case was referred to the area sub-chief who forwarded it to MCF and the two children in need of immediate intervention by MCF to save the lives of the remaining 2 children. Lydia and her younger sister were rescued by MCF from this predicament in the year 2000. She now experiences the love, protection and care of a family. She now has ignited hopes for a better living of her once shattered life especially after the death of her loved ones. She interacts cordially with her fellow beneficiaries, benefiting forth from MCF benevolent care and protection. She has developed a deep enthusiasm for the Christian programs at MCF and expresses it through singing in the devotions and fellowships.

Lydia started schooling while living with the grand mother. But the school life was not a smooth sail as she encountered a lot of hardship in the course. Lack of regular supply of food, cloths, learning material and ill health of the father among others did not auger well with her studies.

At the death of her father, Lydia dropped out of school completely. On her rescue she was enrolled in standard two at MCF School. She has progressed on well ever since and is currently standard seven. She has the potential to perform better academically and has a passion for swimming and children's games.
