![]() | Elizabeth's parents and her two-year-old sister died of HIV/AIDS in 1993. Elizabeth was left an orphan. Her relatives took all her parents' property, leaving the girl with nothing. She was then left with an uncle who failed to give the young girl security, protection and other basic needs. The uncle physically and sexually abused her and never took her to school. She was forced to do all the housework at a very tender age of six years. Her uncle later moved to another town abandoning her. Elizabeth was forced to go to the streets to seek a life there since she had no one to turn to. Life on the streets was difficult for the young girl and she was exposed to all kinds of abuse. Elizabeth was later taken into the children's prison in the town of Eldoret. She was charged and convicted with the offense of loitering and being in need of protection and care. She was in prison for a year before being rescued by Mully Children's Family (MCF) in 1996. The MCF home director identified her for rescue during his routine visits to the Juvenile Remand Home in December 1995. After her rescue she continued to face traumatizing experiences drawn from her earlier life as an abused child. She has, however, been well rehabilitated and is continuing to access all basic needs. Elizabeth had never attended school before rehabilitation and is currently in grade two. She is very active in ball games, and is a very good traditional dancer. She loves to sing in the choir and is a good soloist. She also loves reciting poems. She hopes to be a surgeon in the future. |
