Mary's mother was single with four children. She suffered from HIV/AIDS and related illnesses. She died in 1995, leaving the children alone.

Mary's mother used to work as a barmaid at Juja. After her death, the children were left in the slums of Juja without a relative to care for them. The children's plight was referred to the Children's Department and they were taken to an Approved School/Juvenile Remand Home at Thika town in 1995.

Mully Children's Family (MCF) rescued the children from the Juvenile Home in 1996. Mary was enrolled in grade one and started receiving all other basic needs. She is currently in grade 7 and loves to sing in the choir.
