Kelly was born in the year 2001 in the Kipsongo slums. He is the first born child to Vicky Atabo, a former street girl. Vicky ended up in the street at the age of 16 and became a prostitute. She faced sexual and physical abuse from the men she was "going out with". She also rented a room where she used to entertain men. When she got pregnant she said goodbye to her boyfriends and resided with her aunt until delivery of Kelly.

Kelly's young mother started prostituting immediately after he was born, leaving him most of the time with his aunt. The child was breast fed irregularly for about three months. He developed a lot of malnutrition problems and related diseases. The aunt told Vicky this was not the way to treat her young son. Vicky took the boy and started looking for overnight custodians, as she visited different clubs and disco halls at night. Kelly had a very difficult life as a child due to lack of attention, balanced diet, medical care and clothing. This led to his stunted growth. His mother was identified for rescue in July 2002 by Mully Children's Family (MCF) during a mission to Kitale streets and slums. Kelly was also rescued with the mother in a poor state at the age of one.

Kelly is currently in baby class at MCF Eldoret while his mother is at MCF Yatta girls doing a three-year course in tailoring and dressmaking.
