Andrew's mother was unemployed and her marital life was characterized by cohabiting with different men. Her children all had different fathers. Andrew's mother's lack of attention and absence most of the time exposed the boy to freedom and a vacuum with no guidance. In 2001 Andrew's mother died during childbirth leaving no one to care for the children so they ran to the streets. Andrew spent much of his time in the streets begging for food and sniffing glue and petrol. He was knocked down by a vehicle in July 2001 by a group of drunken street boys. He had lost all hope.

Andrew's case was referred to Mully Children's Family Homes (MCF) by his elderly grandmother in November 2001. He had became accustomed to street life, being influenced by friends in the slums and loitering in the streets most of the time. It was not easy for his grandparents to contain Andrew as he always wanted to escape to the streets of Thika. He was rescued by MCF in 2002 and is now receiving all his basic needs and the love of a family. Andrew had never attended school before rehabilitation. He is now in grade five and is active in ball games and athletics.
