![]() | Tecla is a former street girl. Her mother, a street woman, had no place to call home. Tecla's siblings, a brother and a sister, also born on the street, died due to neglect from their poor mother. Tecla led a life of hopelessness and suffering. Her mother scavenged for food or would prostitute herself to survive. She had no proper health care, food or clothes. They slept on shop verandas or in abandoned houses. Tecla had to assist her mother in begging on the streets, where she would receive donations from well-wishers. The truancy behaviour of the mother landed her in police custody many times exposing young Tecla to more suffering. The only clothes Tecla had were rags or polythene papers to cover herself. Tecla was taken from her mother by the police and brought to Eldoret Juvenile Remand Home for care and protection. It was during the visit to this Home in Eldoret that the Mully Children's Family (MCF) Director identified Tecla. He rescued and admitted her to MCF in 2001. She now recieves specialized attention as she grows up in a loving home environment. She has discovered her talents in athletics and ball games. She started schooling immediately after arriving at MCF. She had poor performance initially, but with much determination, she has done well in her studies. She is now in grade five progressing well after the integration process. She hopes to pursue a course leading to a degree in sociology. |
