Jane is the first born in a family of three children. She was born in the Ndalani location. Her father is unknown and her mother became insane and so could not take care of her children. She took her children to their grandmother and abandoned them. The grandmother relied on government relief food. The area where the grandmother lived was very dry and crops often withered and died before being harvested. Consequently the grandmother and the children went without proper meals and lacked adequate health care as well as clothing.

Jane was engaged in child labour to subsidize whatever little the grandmother could provide. She was exposed to other social ills that lurked in her life as an abandoned orphan girl.

This case was referred to the Mully Children's Family by the area chief and Jane was rescued in February of 1997. She was enrolled in nursery school and is currently in grade five. She is doing well and loves school. She hopes to someday pursue an education and career in the medical-related field.
