![]() | Monica is a victim of the 1992 tribal clashes that left many families in a poor state after the loss of property and life. Her aging father had no hopes of getting any meaningful employment and so he decided to go back to his home place in Makueni leaving his family behind. Monica's mother took her children to Eldoret where she rented a small mud house from her meagre earnings. In 1994 her brother secured a job and enrolled her in a nearby primary school. Her alcoholic father resurfaced in 1994 only to inflict abuse on the children and his wife. The domestic violence the children experienced drove them away from home. Monica moved in with her aunt who also gave her beatings and denied her food. Monica could not bear the abuses from her aunt; so she left to find her family in Makueni, only to find that her mother was not there. She had to stay with her drunkard abusive father and the sister. On many occasions the father brought in men, trying to force Monica to get married to them. She would receive beatings whenever she refused to give in to her father's demands. She had to look for a way to lead a life away from her abusive father. She heard about Mully Children's Family (MCF) and gathered enough courage and approached MCF management. She was given a hearing and was admitted in 2000. There she encountered the love, care and protection that had eluded her. Despite the hardship, she sat for her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in 1998. Her rescue in July 2000 rekindled her hope to pursue education once more. She is hopeful she will perform well in her studies. Her dream is to pursue a medical-related career. |
