![]() | Margaret Nanjeko is the second born in a family of five. She lost her virginity at a very tender age of nine during tribal clashes in Western Kenya. She remembers the incidence with a lot of pain and fear as the rapist would not listen to her scream nor let her free due to her young age. Due to the tribal clashes the family lost all they owned and were driven out of their land. The fighting led to the disappearance of her father who was presumed dead. The remaining family members had to walk over 50 kilometres to Eldoret Slums. They travelled through the bush hiding intermittently to avoid terrorists who were killing and or raping anybody in sight especially young girls. Having lost all their earthly possessions, the family had a very difficult time in the slum accessing basic needs. They depended entirely on donations from the Church and other well wishers. Margaret became employed as a housemaid at age 11, earning a paltry wage and experiencing physical abuse and exploitation. Margaret was rescued by Mully Children's Family (MCF) in August 1993 and enrolled in grade three. She has been doing well in school ever since. She sat for her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in 1998 and received the Best Girl award in those examinations in Yatta Division. She has maintained a high performance ever since. She has every reason to smile about her bright future and hopes to pursue a course in nursing. Margaret is a very responsible, humble and self-controlled young girl. She portrays the spirit of a team leader. She has served as a peer counsellor, a teacher and dependable role model to other girls at MCF homes. |
