Charity was born to a teenage mother Irene Mueni. When Irene's parents realized she was pregnant, they sent her away. She left for her Aunt Maria's home where she delivered Charity. The poverty and hardship that Irene went through was so pathetic that her father forgave her and allowed her to come back home. However, the forgiveness did not last. Irene was accused of bringing disgrace to the family and sent away once more.

Irene's boyfriend had deserted her, leaving her and Charity with no one to turn to for support or protection. She decided to abandon her child at the bank of River Miumoni, blaming Charity for her miseries. Charity's grandmother, seeing her daughter with no child reported the matter to the area chief who mounted a child hunt. Charity was rescued when she was very weak and emaciated. She was taken to the Kimutwa Health Centre where she was treated. Her mother was taken into police custody to face charges of child neglect and attempted murder. The judge was lenient and put her on probation and requested Mully Children's Family (MCF) home admit her. The probation offi cer made regular visits to see if she had changed her attitude towards Charity. Irene showed a considerable change of attitude and behaviour towards her which persuaded MCF management to let her enrol at MCF Yatta Girls Centre for vocational training, along with other girls, as she took care of her baby. Irene initially adjusted positively, but her old ways crept back and she disappeared from the centre to an unknown destination with Charity. She went to her family home but was met with an unforgiving father who scared her enough to fl ee with her infant.

To solve her miseries, she tried to strangle Charity while bathing her. Neighbours who were watching her at a distance reported her. Irene was picked up by police and taken to court to face charges of child neglect and attempted murder once more. She was released on bond and the case has not yet been determined.

Charity was committed to MCF home for an initial period of three years for protection and care as of August 2004. Irene is only allowed to visit her under supervision. Charity was taken to MCF Eldoret home for further medical care and protection where she has been ever since.
